Aug 9, 2018, 8:04 am

Saturday 4th August saw our 1st team travel to Chopwell to play GEMS, we lost the toss and GMS elected to bat on their small ground. Our opening bowlers Cory Milburn and Dean Greaves made some early inroads removing three of the top four batsmen however A Mukhtar made 41, J Mirza 46, Z Shahid 78 and J Qureshi 47 helped push their score along to 254 all out.

Our bowlers Cory Milburn 3 wickets for 40 runs, Dean Greaves 3 for 27, James Richards 0 for 49, Mark Lawrence 2 for 62 and Scott Maddison 1 for 42.

We started the chase off by trying to score but not give wickets away opening bat Harwood fell for 15, this brought Adam Peacock to the crease with Cullum Milburn the pair put on a good partnership before Callum fell for 35, and Adam went for 58, David Dent for 25 and then Cory Milburn made a fight of it scoring 45 batting at number 8, he hit a massive six which landed on football pitch and even the GEMS players applauded, we eventually fell 27 runs short in our run chase posting 217 all out.

We need to look to pick up 2 wins from our last 5 games to keep us away from the third bottom playoff position.

GEMS 30 points Ashington Rugby CC 10 points

Our 2nd team welcomed Rock 1st Team to the REC, we won the toss and put them into bat. A Ferry scored 41 and K Wilson 30 with a late order partnership.

Our best bowlers was T. Elliott who took 3 wickets for 16.

Our run chased started very poorly losing 6 of our top 7 bats for only 30 runs, T. Parkinson from Rock taking 6 wickets for 20 runs in his spell.

Michael Adamson our number 3 bat and Craig Jobson our number 8 bat dig in and then bated brilliantly seeing the Rugger boys to a great win Michael scoring 64 not out and Craig scoring 48 not out. We won a game from the jaws of defeat.

Saturday 21st July saw our first team travel to Benwell & Wallbottle in a key game for the club. Our captain had stood down and with David Dent the vice-captain still injured Cory Milburn took the reins. We lost the toss and were put into bat on a wicket which behaved with a lot of indifferent bounce. Matty Tanney and Callum Milburn made a steady start, Matty out for 14 and Callum given out LBW on 20 when he hit the ball down leg side. After these only Mark Lawrence on 19 and James Richards 18 not out made double figures and really poor score was posted of 107 all out.

Benwell bowlers S. Wotherspoon 2 wickets for 25 runs, M. Brown 3 for 29, J. Turnbull 2 for 21, S. Reed 2 for 21 and M. Tomlinson 1 for 3.

Our opening bowlers had to do some damage early on to give us any chance Cory struck early on removing Bertram and Reed both clean bowled, however Benwell’s M. Tomlinson 47 not out and Wotherspoon 43 steadied the ship and Benwell made it over the line winning by 6 wickets.

Our bowlers D. Greaves 0 wickets for 19 runs, Cory Milburn 2 for 13, M. Lawrence 1 for 46, J. Richards 0 for 30, M. Tanney 1 for 5.

This defeat dropped our 1st team down to fourth from bottom which is not good as there is a playoff with the third bottom team playing the third top from the league below and what makes matters worse is that Benwell & Wallbottle are the team third bottom so they closed the gap on us to 70 points.

Benwell & Wallbottle 30 points Ashington Rugby CC 3 points.

Our Second team entertained Embelton 1st at the REC looking to pick themselves up from the defeat by league leaders away at Kirkley last week. We won the toss and elected to bat captain Rosser started off well with his partner Dean Hardy ticking the score over. Rosser out for 36 Michael Adamson scored a tidy 31, we found it hard to get away their attack which bowled good lines and lengths. We ended up 143 for 8 off our 40 overs. E Thorpe was the pick of the Embelton bowlers taking 3 wickets for 17 runs.

Embelton start the run chase with gusto however that was there down fall the opener hit young Owen Mason for a 4 over his head second ball however the third ball he was out bowled, Owen bowled a tidy spell taking 3 wickets for 29 runs in his 5 overs not bad for a 12 year old. Tome More took 3 for 32 in his 10 overs and Trevor Elliott took 3 for 7 off his short spell.

Embelton finished all out on 100 the Rugby boy winning by 43 runs.

Ashington Rugby 29 points CC points Embelton CC 6 points.
