Greaves Outstanding in debut
Jul 7, 2016, 1:28 pm

Sunday 3rd July we had 2 players in the league team who played at Backworth CC and the away team was West Tyne League, our 2 players were Adam Peacock and 50 year old Dean Greaves the oldest swinger in town and possibly the oldest player to make his debut for the league side. We batted first and scored 208 for 9.

When we bowled Mr Greaves had too much in his locker with his swing bowling doing the damage, he opened up the bowling and did what he has done for nearly 20 years for our club, bowled tight and took wickets in his 8 over spell he took 7 for 31, including 2 wicket in 2 balls. The Northumberland League team won by over 100 runs.

Dean Greaves man of the match (still some life left in the old dog yet)

Weather helped us this time
Jul 7, 2016, 1:19 pm

Saturday 2nd July our 1st team travel to neighbours Ulgham CC, still without our Captain Chris Harwood and Vice-Captain Cory Milburn. This was a day with rain showers throughout the day and was a day to try to dodge the rain, we won the toss and put Ulgham in to bat and in no time at all the covers were on the off and back on again, a total of three times. We took 2 early wickets and then Ulgham batsmen dug in, we were happy with the runs conceded with only 50 odd coming off the first 25 overs. D. Campbell 32, R. Haygarth 42 and N. Dodds 27 not out pushed their score on to 155 for 8 after the 50 overs were bowled. D. Greaves 13 over 0 for 19, James Richards 13 overs 3 for 32, David Dent 3 for 36.

Our run chase got off to a bad start losing both openers M. Tanney for 5 and D. Dent for 8, in came in Adam Peacock stand in captain for the day and he produced a captain’s innings he batted well slowly building his score the eventually finished with 62 not out and seeing us home to an important win, Adam was helped with 29 from Lewis Tanney11 for Michael Adamson and 12 not out for Dean Hardy. This was a much needed win, and with the news that close rivals Tillside CC and GEMS CC were both rained off, this helped our club to go top of the Northumberland Premier League, a momentous occasion for the club this is the first time this has happened in the 34 year history of our club.

Ulgham CC 5 points and Ashington Rugby CC 29 points

Our 2nd team game was at the Rec they entertained Embleton CC we won the toss and put them into bat and we did very well bowling them out for 91, C Thorp top scored for the Embleton with 30. Our main bowlers were C. Jobson 3 for 19 and David Wanless Snr 5 for 30. We lost 1 wickets chasing and eventually posted 92 for 1, David Wanless Jnr top scored on 42 not out and support by S. Henderson who was also not out.

Ashington Rugby CC 30 points and Embleton CC 0 points.

What went wrong
Jul 7, 2016, 12:54 pm

Saturday 25th June our 1st team welcome Blagdon Park CC visit the REC on a very wet day, we sat around for a long time due to the torrential rain, eventually we got started, the game was reduced to 25 overs and we lost the toss and was put into bat. We did not shower ourselves in glory as we were all out for 71 with only Dean Hardy and Michael Adamson who scored 17 and 16 respectively, shot selection was not the best and you only get out of the game what you put in. Blagdon easily chased down the poor target with the loss of only 2 wickets. This was a very bad result for the club who were looking to keep up their push for top spot.

Ashington Rugby CC 1 point and Blagdon Park CC 30 points

Our 2nd team game was called off with Stobswoods CC wicket not fit due to the heavy rain.

Wicket comes out on top
Jun 19, 2016, 9:40 pm

Saturday 18th June saw our 1st team travel to neighbours Blyth, with a number of regular players missing including our Captain Harwood who split the webbing in his hand the week before and will be out for a few weeks. Vice-Captain Cory Milburn took over the duties he won the toss and elected to bat on a damp iffy looking track with over cast conditions.

We lost opening bat Dean hardy to a strange delivery when the ball just ballooned up and the dropped onto of the bails for 1 and then his partner former Blyth player David Dent LBW to Ebdale for 10, things did not get much better when Adamson, Peacock and Lewis Tanney all went for 1 or less, with the wicket misbehaving jumping and shooting it was hard to set a platform. Cory went for 8, his dad for 11, Steven Parson in his first game of the season hit 12 with some big hits before being caught on the boundary, we finished all out for a paltry 83, out highest score was wides with 20. Their bowling Ebdale 3 for 33, Thompson 2 for 13, Singh 3 for 22 and Lawrence 3 for 13.

We had to go hard at Blyth from the start and that is what we did, it was not helping with the sun coming out and drying the wicket, however Dean Greaves put in a master class with 7 wickets for 15 runs and the David Dent paid back some of the banter he got from his former team mates by taking the other 3 wickets for 26, we bowled Blyth out for 64 meaning that we won by 14 runs in a game where the wicket did the damage. The win kept us in second place in the league 21 points behind leaders Tilside CC, more than that we showed tremendous spirt and belief in ourselves to come through this match with a win, when most teams would have given up.

Blyth CC 5 points and Ashington Rugby CC 25 points.

Our 2nd team was scheduled to play Clara Vale CC at home however they conceded late in the morning giving us maximum points, not the way we want to get them as we would have preferred to play.

Hard fought win
Jun 12, 2016, 7:06 pm

Saturday 11th June saw our 1st team travel to Chopwell to Play 3rd placed GEMS, on a damp and overcast day with drizzle around, the toss was very important, never mind the wicket which was a sight to be seen. It had been used previously and the groundsman decided to move the wicket back 1 yard which meant you could see the stump holes on the front crease line and to a left handed bat there was the bowlers foot marks/hole 1 yard further down the track, the wicket had what could only be called a ramp at one end. The strangest wicket we have ever seen.

Never mind the track we won the toss and elected to bowl no surprise there, birthday boy Dean Greaves (50 today) did what he has done for years kept it tight bowling his 13 overs straight through taking 2 wickets for 36 runs with 4 maidens. Cory Milburn bowled at the ramp and he had the ball doing all sorts often the keeper was having to tip the ball upwards and then take it on the way down, he took 2 wickets for 16 runs off his first spell of 8 overs. Lewis Tanney came into the attack with Scott (The wicket Burglar) Maddison and they came across J. Mirza who had decided to go for it and go for it he did hitting 13 fours and 3 sixes in his swashbuckling 82 eventually falling to Cory in his second spell as the extra pace did him caught in front LBW. GEMS were all out for 162 when at one stage they didn’t look like they would score 100.

Our bowlers finished with; Dean Greaves 2 for 36, Cory Milburn 3 for 39, Lewis Tanney 2 for 46 and Scott Maddison 3 for 41.

Our batting was held up slightly with the drizzle coming but not for long, David Dent got a horror ball which shot along the floor trapped LBW for 4, Matty Tanney also went for 4 caught behind square, Michael Adamson came to the crease along with Adam Peacock to try to build a partnership and to try not lose any more wickets which they did for a while before Midge was bowled on 12 by A. Mukhtar and his strange bowling action better not say anything more on that subject. We needed to hold fast and that is what happened when Adam was joined by Lewis Tanney they played for fine shots on the wicket and put on a partnership of 73 before Lewis was out LBW on 36 with the score on 115 we lost Cory and his dad in consecutive balls and in came captain Chris Harwood who had to leave the field earlier when trying to take a catch, when we were fielding as he split the webbing on his hand (looked a mess) he came in and help Adam with the scoring with Chris Harwood hitting a six to finish the game off in the 25 overs with the score on 165 for 6. Adam Peacock hit 66 not out with 4 fours and 3 sixes in his total Chris not out 10.

We stayed in 2nd place in the league and with Tillside CC losing, the gap at the top became closer.

GEMS CC 6 points and Ashington Rugby CC 28 points.

Our 2nd team were at home at the REC however the covers were never pushed apart due to the rain it never stopped, the visitors were Whitley Bay CC. Game abandoned 5 points each.

Flames Extinguished
Jun 5, 2016, 7:32 pm

Saturday 4th June saw our club play both Blue Flames teams, our 1st team at home we lost the toss and our captain was annoyed as he wanted to bat first on another great looking wickets for our batsmen. We also had the challenge of missing two of our main bowlers, Dean Greaves injured and James Richards on holiday. We brought in Craig Jobson from our seconds along with Ant Elliott.

We opened up with Cory Milburn and Craig and the Flames started off steady and they had 34 on the board by the time the first wicket went down in the 9th over. They lost their next on 61 in the 16 over they put together steady partnerships but never really got the score moving quickly, on a wicket which was made for batsmen our bowlers had to try to bowl tight lines with good length and make them make the mistakes which they started to do ending up all out on 182 which we were happy to chase. Our bowlers who took wickets were Cory Milburn 2 for 35, Lewis Tanney 1 for 40 and yes the wicket burglar Scott (Patterson, Paterson) Madison 5 for 41, with 1 run out.

We lost regular wickets with opener David Dent in the 6th overs with 22 on the board, then Matty Tanney in the 11th with the score on 43, Adam Peacock hung around but was then given out LBW off his box when he was on 25, with the score on 65. This brought our youngsters together Cory and Lewis and a lot resting on them, staring to build again which they did brilliantly with some maturity and splendid shots. Cory fell on 28 and Lewis went soon after when on 53 they put on 76 run partnership and the score on 141. We then lost our captain Harwood the score had only moved to 147 and we were still 35 runs behind the total they posted, Michael (Midge) Adamson just back off holidays and Paul Milburn came together and started to build again with 10 overs left in the innings, they saw us home with 3 and a bit overs to spare Midge 13 into out and Paul 23 not out.

Ashington Rugby CC 29 points and Blue Flames 7 points

Our 2nd X1 was depleted on players due to call ups to the 1st team and others not being available, we won the toss and elected to bat on a strange looking deck, it paid dividends with us bowling them all out for 70 with captain Ryan Pringle and Trevor (Mr Angry) Elliott both taking 4 wickets each Ryan for 19 runs and Trevor 22.

Our opening batsmen Dean Hardy and Stu Rosser saw us home without losing a wicket Dean on 35 and Stu on 29. That meant we had truly put out the Flames with our innings not even getting to the 15th over. Great win in the circumstances a real team effort well done lads.

Ash topple both Backworth teams
May 30, 2016, 9:27 pm

Saturday 28th May saw both teams play Backworth CC, for the first time ever since their relegation from Northumberland Tyneside Senior League (NTSL). Our first team was at home at the REC, it was a warm but overcast day and the toss was important to win as the wicket looked like another road (batters paradise) we lost the toss and Backworth elected to bat, we were gutted but we were focused on the game, we had been warming up since 11.00 and we ready for the match. Backworth were sitting top of the league unbeaten and they were confident however the rugger boys we up for the fight.

Backworth started brightly with Clarke hitting some fine shots early on, however with the score on 17 they lost their captain Robson bowled by Greaves for 0, then the next ball J. Duncan was trapped in front LBW he didn’t expect the swing Dean was getting, that was 2 down for 17. Clarke was the next to fall bowled by Greaves on 21 leaving Backworth 32 for 3, to the jubilation of the Rugger boys. A. Pisani came in and carried a bit of luck with the ball flying of the edge a number of times running through 3rd man area. Pisani did bat well to get his total to 43 before being caught well in the outfield by Dean Hardy, when Pisani was out the score was on 76 afters 22 overs and then the rugger boys put a squeeze on the runs bowling very tight and also taking wickets. It took Backworth another 13 overs before they hit three figures and by then they had lost 6 wickets.  Eventually posting 156 for 9, off their 50 overs.

Our bowling D. Greaves rolled back the years taking 4 for 29 off 13 overs, C. Milburn 2 for 47 off 13 overs, J. Richards 1 for 26 off 13 overs and Scott (the wicket burglar) Maddison 2 for 46 off 11 overs.

We were aware a good start was important not letting them into the game we got to 33 in the 7th over before losing opening bat Matty Tanney after he bludgeon 5 fours in his 26 off 20 balls. In came Adam Peacock to Partner David Dent, they played brilliantly and developed a great partnership, with some glorious shots, D. Dent hit 6 fours in his 42 not out off 63 balls and A. Peacock hit 10 fours and 4 sixes in his fantastic knock of 84 not out off 68 balls, we reached the target of 156 and passed it off 25.4 overs with 24.2 overs to spare with the loss of only 1 wicket, brilliant days for the Rugger boys.

Ashington Rugby CC 29 points and Backworth CC 3 points.

Our 2nds travelled to unbeaten Backworth expecting a very tough game, they batted first and scoring only 69 all out, our bowling attack bowled great lines which caused Backworth no end of trouble the main men were C. Jobson 4 wickets for 17 runs, T. Elliott 3 for 16 this tore the heart out of the batting line up. We reached the target for the loss of 5 wickets with A. Black taking 2 wickets for 26 runs however that didn’t stop the rugger boys getting home to secure maximum pots on the travels.

Backworth CC 2 points and Ashington Rugby CC 30 points.

Great day at the office as they say both Backworth teams loss their unbeaten runs to the boys from Ashington.

First win at Berwick
May 23, 2016, 12:54 pm

Saturday 21st May saw our 1st team take the long travel to Berwick CC, on a windy day, we lost the toss and were asked to bat. Our run machine from last week Mr. Dent fell in the first over without troubling the scorer. We only started to build a partnership when Adam Peacock and Captain Chris Harwood came together at the crease, Adam falling for 17 and Chris for 30. This brought the two youngsters together Lewis Tanney and Cory Milburn, they batted showing maturity above their years to help build a platform for the club. Lewis was the lead run scorer in the partnership hit some beautiful shots in his 83 not out, Cory played well in his 26. We ended up 206 for 7 in our 50 overs which was a good effort on that track and especially with the loss of wickets early on. S. Emery bowled well for Berwick in his spell taking 5 for 42.

Berwick’s run chase started off slowly mainly due to the good bowling of Dean Greaves and David Dent who bowled their 13 overs straight through. Greaves took 1 for 30 and Dent 0 for 21, this restricted Berwick to only 60 odd on the board halfway through. Berwick’s run scorers were M. Hush with 33, J. Paterson 39 and S. Emery 21, they finished all out 178. Our wicket takers were D. Greaves 1 for 30, C. Milburn 2 for 55, J. Richards 2 for 35 and S. Maddison (the wicket burglar) 4 for 25.

Great win and our clubs first win at Berwick which has previously been a bogey ground. That is 2 wins on the bounce, we need to keep the run going if we want to do anything in the league this season

Berwick CC 7 Points and Ashington Rugby CC 30 points.

Our 2nd team played at home at the REC entering the visitors Monkseaton CC, we won the toss and elected to bat on a good looking deck, we scored 167 with Jay Little top scoring with 64. M Graham took 3 for 52 and A. Simms 4 for 45 bowling for Monkseaton CC. Their run chase did not get going and were bowled all out for 80, our leading bowlers were C. Jobson 4 for 19 and S. Henderson 3 for 22.

Well done another good win.

Ashington Rugby CC 30 points and Monkseaton CC 6 points.
