1st lose 2nds win
Jun 27, 2019, 4:58 pm

Saturday 22nd June on a warm sunny day our 1st team welcomed Blagdon Park CC to the “REC”, we lost the toss and not surprisingly Blagdon elected to bat on a wicket that looked like a road.

We made a fair start considering we had three 1st team players missing, taking early wickets first wicket on 11 ruins, second on 35 but then a good stand of 96 before the third wicket fell on 131.

M. Foster with 77, N. Clough with 45, D. Gibson 33 not out and P. Johnson 23 not out pushed their score to 213 for 6 wickets.

Our bowlers D. Greaves 12 overs 1 wicket for 29 runs, James Richards 8 overs, 1 wicket for 27, Craig Jobson 6 overs, 0 wickets for 44 runs, and the pick of our bowlers was Mark Lawrence 12 overs 4 wickets for 38 runs, Scott Maddison 11 overs 0 wickets for 62 runs.

We had a bad start losing wickets early on we lost our 1st wicket on 11, 2nd on 50, 3rd on 76, 4th on 81 and 5th on 138 after that we lost our last 5 wickets for a very poor 9 runs eventually being bowled out for 147 after 43.4 overs. The frustration being if we batted out the overs and reached 150 or 175 we would have picked up additional bonus points.

We had one shining light that was Adam Peacock who played a fantastic innings posting a very tidy 94 before being stumped, when he was at the crease we had a chance, the only other players who hit double figures was Matty Tanney 16 and Dean Hardy 12.

Ashington Rugby CC 5 points Blagdon Park CC 30 points

Our 2nd team had to play our game on Sunday 23rd due to a mistake with the fixtures by the league, our game was the first of the T20 Big Bash matches, and we won the toss and elected to bowl.

Missing our opening bowler who was drafted into our first team, we opened up with Owen Mason who bowled his 5 overs taking 1 wicket for 20 runs, Ricky Gibson 5 overs, 3 wickets for 27 runs, Oven Jarvis 5 overs 3 wickets for 38 runs and Trevor Elliott 4.4 overs 3 wickets for 15 runs, this restricted Blyth CC to 100 all out. Blyth’s main run scorers were S. Singh 33 and R. Carrigan 36

Our run chase started well openers Paul Milburn and Michael (Midge) Adamson scoring off the bad balls we kept the runs ticking over and put pressure on Blyth’s fielders. Midge was eventually out LBW to Surge Singh for 25, in came Gareth (Spike) Newman who hung around but was then caught for 5. In marched Jonny Richards who is his way attacked the bowling eventually hitting the winning runs with a boundary four when we reached our total of 104 for 2 after 16.1 overs. Paul finished on 50 not out and Jonny with 11 not out.

REC hosts county game
Jun 21, 2019, 12:56 pm

Rugby Club hosts county game.

Monday 10th June saw Northumberland under 11s take on Cleveland at the “Rec”.

They played 2 games of 20 over cricket, Cleveland won the first game and Northumberland the second. Our facilities were a hub of activity with over 40 children plus parents and family members.

It is nice to be able to show off our facilities to our guests, and see the children enjoying themselves, we received a number of very complementary comments on our set up.

One game on one off
Jun 20, 2019, 12:57 pm

Saturday 15th June saw our 1st team travel to Warkworth CC for their league game, game got underway but never got finished Warkworth batted first and posted a good total over 250 for 3. Helped by their professional who came in at 5 with the score on 84 for 3 off 36 overs after the remaining 14 overs another 170 was added to the score with the pro finishing up on 113 not out.

Our run chase did not last long before the rain came we finished off with 55 for 1 wicket.

Warkworth CC 13 points and Ashington Rugby CC 9 points

The Rec had a flood on Thursday due to the heavy rain and our groundsman removed approx. 12 wheel barrow full of water and then 4 loads from our Bow Dry machine on Friday night, similar removal of water removed with the Bow Dry machine on Saturday and the ground was still brining up water when walking on the outfield. We had to call the game off ground not fit.

Ashington Rugby CC 5 points and Newcastle CC 5 points

1st win a tight cup game
Jun 7, 2019, 7:29 pm

Wednesday 5th June saw our 1st team welcome Warkworth CC to the “REC” for a second round of the William Birkett Memorial Cup, Warkworth won the toss and elected to bat on a great looking wicket and outfield. The big attraction to the game was Kamran Mansoor,   Warkworth’s new professional he did not disappoint with some big hitting in his 72 off 54 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes before being caught and bowled by Captain Mark Lawrence with the total on 116 when he was out, Warkworth eventually finished their 20 overs with 139 for 8 a great fight back by the Rugger boys but also a formidable total by Warkworth.

Greaves taking 3 wickets for the Rugger boys for 26 runs off his 5 overs, 2 wickets each for Mark Lawrence and Scott Maddison and 1 for Craig Jobson.

Our run chased did not start well losing opener Matthew Tanney with the score on 4 in the first over. The partnership for Ash was between Callum Milburn with 26 and a fine 69 by Adam Peacock leaving Craig Jobson to hit the winning runs with 5 balls left with our total of 140 for 6. What a great display by Ashington Rugby CC chasing down a good total and what a game of cricket for the spectators.

Next round is an away tie at Berwick CC.
