1st Win a close match 2nds lose
Sep 5, 2019, 1:53 pm

On 31st August our first team entertained Warkworth CC who are 2nd in Division 3 and ourselves who are sitting 4th. We won the toss and elected to bat first we lost early wickets first wicket at 14, second on 41 and third on 56 and fourth on 90, Adam Peacock was the shining light in our batting this week he post a good 61 and our 10th wicket stand of 31 between Anthony Elliott with 18 and 16 not out by Dean Greaves saw us through to a disappointing 164 all out.

Warkworth stand out bowlers were D. Potts with 12 overs, 5 wickets for 37 and M. Potts 9 overs 3 wickets for 33 runs.

We knew we had a challenge on our hands with Warkworth’s pro Kamran Mansoor who hit a 100 not out in the earlier season reverse of this fixture.

We bowled well trying to keep it tight and applying pressure at the same time, we were very pleased to see the back of Mansoor who strangely kneeled down trying to play an extravagant shot against our spin bowler Scott Maddison, and he missed the ball and was out bowled for 43. Along with runs for M. Potts 20 and 31 not out from Martin Clark saw the game become very close with Warkworth needing 6 from the final over which was bowled by Dean Greaves Warkworth eventually finished up on 160 for 9.

This meant that we had won by 4 runs a brilliant result which opened up the promotion race for other clubs as this saw Warkworth drop to third place and ourselves stayed in fourth place with 350 points with 10 wins, 3 defeats and 7 games cancelled or abandoned due to the weather, if only we could have played the same games as the teams above us we could also be in the fight for the top two we are sitting 39 point back from second place with 60 to play for.

Our bowlers;

Dean Greaves - 10 overs 2 wickets for 28 runs

James Richards - 12 overs 2 wickets for 31 runs

Mark Lawrence - 12 overs 2 wickets for 37 runs

Scott Maddison – 12 overs 3 wickets for 45 runs

Cory Milburn - 4 overs 0 wickets for 12 runs

Ashington Rugby CC 27 points & Warkworth CC 8 points

Our 2nd team travelled to Heaton for our match against Newcastle 3rds this being the final game of the season with us needing 2 points to win the league.

With a couple of players missing we needed to get our heads up after last week’s defeat. We won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be a poor wicket with indifferent bounce. We struggled to post 106 for 5 from our 40 overs with free scoring Stu Rosser scoring 40 not out from 40 overs, Michael Adamson 14 and Craig Jobson with 10.

Our wicket fell at 16 for 1, 36 for 2, 74 for 3 78 for 4 and 98 for 5.

Newcastle’s reply was it took them 33 overs to hit the winning runs with the loss of 3 wickets, they lost their wickets at 15 for 1, 92 for 2 and 105 for 3. Tiger Roberts 48 and Australian Piran Retize 41 not out. Well done to a very youthful Newcastle team the best team won on the day.

Our bowlers;

Craig Jobson - 8 overs 1 wicket for 16 runs

Owen Mason - 8 overs 0 wickets for 28 runs

David Wanless - 7 overs 0 wickets for 15 runs

Trevor Elliot - 4 overs 0 wickets for 18 runs

Ricky Gibson – 4 overs 1 wicket for 13 runs

Michael Adamson – 1 over 0 wickets for 13 runs

Johnny Richards 1 over 1 wicket for 2 runs

Newcastle CC 3rd 27 points & Ashington Rugby CC 3 points

The 3 points we took from toady’s game was enough for us to be crown League Champions the first time our club at 1st or 2nd team level has ever won a league, well done to all the players this season great effort and a special thank you and praise for our captain Stu Rosser with nearly 800 runs with an average of over 130 brilliant effort with 4 hundreds and 2 fifties.

Great win for 1st team
Sep 5, 2019, 8:44 am

After weeks of no games due to the weather our 1st team visited Alnmouth & Lesbury 2nd team for their division 3 clash on 24th August.

We won the toss and elected to bat, we lost our openers early and Adam Peacock along with the impressive Lewis Tanney built a great partnership Adam posting a fine 48 and Lewis hitting a superb 82 along with his next partner Cory Milburn who scored 23 we finished all out in 49.5 overs with the score on 228.

David Johnson was the pick of Alnmouth’s bowlers taking 5 wickets for 39 runs from 9 overs.

In return Alnmouth struggled to get going with the bat due to our bowling attack who put the balls in the right areas. Only 4 Alnmouth players made it to double figures and were all out for 80 runs after 34.4 overs.

Our bowlers who took wickets were;

Dean Greaves - 12 overs 1 wicket for 23 runs

James Richards - 12 overs 4 wickets for 26 runs

Cory Milburn - 4 overs 1 wicket for 9 runs

Mark Lawrence - 5 overs 3 wickets for 6 runs

Scott Maddison – 1.4 overs 1 wicket for 9 runs

Alnmouth & Lesbury CC 2nds 5 points & Ashington Rugby CC 30 points

Our 2nd team entertained third placed Riding Mill 1st team at the “Rec”, they won the toss and no surprise they elected to bat on a good looking wicket. With 3 key players missing for this important game everyone had to stand up and take responsibilities for the team.

A wayward first 4 to 5 overs gave Riding Mill a great start hitting 40 odd in 4 overs, this was mainly due to opener G. Howden who tried and did most times slap the ball square for a boundary four he eventually fell on 29. J. Walker who hit 30 and L. James 24 helped push their score on to 150 all out.

Our bowlers were;

Craig Jobson - 9 overs 0 wicket for 32 runs

Owen Mason - 7 overs 1 wicket for 40 runs

David Wanless - 9 overs 2 wickets for 28 runs

Trevor Elliot - 9 overs 2 wickets for 17 runs

Ricky Gibson – 5.5 overs 3 wickets for 26 runs

Our batting reply got off to a poor start losing opener Paul Milburn to a great ball which jagged back and bowled him for 6. We never really built any notable partnerships and when we lost top run scorer and Captain Stu Rosser for 29 things looked tough and with no one digging in we lost regular wickets Johnny Richards 21, Craig Jobson 28 and Kevin Hetherington 28 not out were the only ones to post anything in double figures. Taking into account we had 3 regular players missing it didn’t take long to get to our tail and we eventually all out for 138 losing by 12 runs.

The main bowlers from Riding Mill who did the damage was I. Mayfield 8 overs 3 wickets for 37 runs and L. Mallinson 8 overs 5 wickets for 10 runs.

This was our first league defeat of the season we are still sitting top of the table however the gap has stated to close especially with those around us playing when our games have been rained off. On to next week we need 3 points to be sure of winning the league.

2 great wins
Aug 10, 2019, 12:04 pm

Saturday 3rd August saw Corbridge CC visit the REC for a league game, weather warm no over cast conditions, Corbridge CC won the toss and elected to bat.

They lost their first wicket on 17 bowled by the evergreen Dean Greaves; he struck again removing Australian Shoesmith on 4 with the total on 25. We bowled very well restricting their score and applying pressure, we quickly realised that spin was the way forward with our spin bowlers taking 6 wickets, Mark Lawrence being the star of the show taking 5 wickets for 15 runs. Corbridge only had on four players who scored double figures and the highest score was 36 by Atkinson. Eventually they were all out for 122 after 34.4 overs.

Our bowlers who took wickets Dean Greaves 12 overs 3 wickets for 35 runs, James Richards 12 overs 1 wicket for 41 runs, Mark Lawrence 5.4 overs 5 wickets for 15 runs, Scott Maddison 1 over 1 wickets for 0 runs.

Our run chase got off to a bad start with captain Dent hitting a first ball full toss straight to a fielder. The runs wasn’t easy to come by but we kept plugging away we lost wickets at 25, 58, 103 and our fifth for 120 before we won the game with 5 wickets down with the score on 126. Matty Tanney hit 44, David Dent 0, Adam Peacock 10, Callum Milburn 24, Lewis Tanney 34 and our two not out bats were Jay Little 6 and Cory Milburn 4.

Great win as Corbridge were 3rd in the league we took maximum points.

Ashington Rugby CC 30 points Corbridge CC 3 points.

Our 2nd team who are sitting top of their division travelled to local rivals and 2nd placed Bomarsund CC. We lost the toss and Bomar elected to bat and with us being a bit light in the bowling it was a good move with their opener Adam McTaggart hitting a great 125 not out supported by John Haig with 26 and Captain Alex Breeze with a lusty 24 finishing on 219 for 4 after their 40 overs.

We knew we had the batting ability as we had being batting well this season however Bomar made it hard for us, the star of our show was again our Captain Stuart Rosser who hit a great 132 in our reply support by Dean Hardy and Owen Jarvis who hit 21 and 11 not out respectively. Jarvi hitting two fine boundary fours to see us home with 7 balls to spare we finished on 222 for 6. This was the first time both of our openers had been put out this season.

This great win kept us top of the league 308 points 75 ahead of GEMS in second place and 82 above Riding Mill in third, Bomar dropped to fourth 1 point behind Riding Mill.

Bomarsund CC 8 points Ashington Rugby CC 27 points
