The Rugger boys show some fight
Sep 3, 2012, 7:57 pm

Sunday 2nd September in a double header of the weekend this game against Tillside also at home, this game was an early rearranged match from the second game of the season when the full fixture programme was washed out, we had a much weakened 1st team with captain Greaves unable to play with a knee injury and 4 others watching Newcastle, in came the old guard with 2 youngster from the 2nd team.

Tillside won the toss, so no change there even with a different captain, we still cannot win the toss. Tillside elected to bat and set a good target of 173 for 8 (the exact same score set by Blagdon the day before) their captain G. Turnbull top scored with 63 and Bickerton supported with a useful 38. P. Milburn picking up 3 for 48 with the ball 1 wicket with seam up and 2 wickets from off spin in his second spell.

Captain Adamson opened up with Harwood and Hetherington who was the first wicket to fall early on, onto the field went Adamson who with Harwood built a useful partnership, before the Adamson wicket fell. For once we started to build partnerships scoring just below what we required but that did not matter with wickets in hand. Harwood fell on 66 and we needed to build again, P. Milburn came to the crease and started to pick up runs, he finished with 40 not out with 2 huge sixes and 3 fours in his total. We ended up winning with 7 overs to spare with only 6 wickets down. Cameron McGregor bowled a very fine spell of spin bowling for the visitors taking 3 for 27 off his 13 overs.

Even after our nearest rivals Corbridge managed to tie a game with only 66 runs scored yesterday and picked up 15 points, 9 more that we did we were over the moon with the win against Tillside, when news came through that Corbridge beat Blagdon Park picking up a useful 29 points. Well back to the drawing board for the Rugger boys.

Blagdon Park too strong
Sep 3, 2012, 7:54 pm

Saturday 1st September saw the 1st team at home against a very strong Blagdon Park team who are sitting 2nd in the Premier League. We lost the toss and Blagdon decided to bat on our track at the “Rec”.

We had near to our strongest team and we needed to be good at all facets of the game to give us a chance, one big problem was the Tanney brothers did not turn up till 45 minutes after the start. We set off well with 3 early wickets with only 9 men on the field with the captain Dean Greaves bowling a good opening spell. Blagdon finished with 173 all out which was a great effort by the lads.

Bowling figures Dean Greaves 3 for 36, Cory Milburn 1 for 44, Trevor Elliot 2 for 24 and Lewis Tanney 3 for 24.

Chasing a target of 174 to win we set off OK, however it was not long before the wickets started to fall and they continued to fall at steady intervals with no one really getting in and being able to build a score Michael (Midge) Adamson top scored with 24 against his former club, we were eventually all out 107.

Our 2nd Team were at Blagdon Park and played the game with only 9 men following a couple of late cry off's. Blagdon Park batted first and hit 201 for 4 off their 40 overs. We scored 167 for 6 chasing which was a great effort with weak team and only 9 players. Great effort boys!!!!!!!!!!!

Groundsman barrows off water from outfield
Aug 29, 2012, 9:37 am

Tuesday 28th August saw our groundsman remove 11 wheelbarrows full of water from outfield in 5 areas. We have an area approx 150 yards x 30 yards which is soaking wet and brining up a lot of water when walked on.

We are praying that the heavy rain forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday does not fall on our ground other wise the Saturday and Sunday league matches will be in doubt.

"Oh No" Not again hit by the rain
Aug 25, 2012, 2:43 pm

Saturday 25th August saw both teams due to play Corbridge, the "Rec" had pools of water on the outfield and was still raining when we had to call the game off pitch not fit for play.

2nd team game was called off earlier in the morning ground not fit.

Almouth & Lesbury just too strong
Aug 25, 2012, 2:38 pm

Saturday 18th August saw a weakened 1st team missing 5 players, travel league leaders to Alnmouth, in what was to prove to be a one sided game. We lost the toss and were asked to bat first and we could only manage 87. Alnmouth batters especially Paul Straker went for it from the start and he finished 65 not out and Alnmouth won the game easy by 10 wickets.

We have just got to hold up our hands and say the best team won on the day, they outplayed us in all areas.

Our best wishes to Almouth & Lesbury in their chase for the title this season.

Youngsters Shine but Same old Story for 1st Team
Aug 18, 2012, 8:24 am

The first team entertained last year's champions Bedlington at the rec looking to cause an upset and win at home for the first time this season.

After skipper Greaves won the toss and elected to bat, the home side were soon in trouble as Maddison, Harwood and Paul Milburn were soon back in the pavilion with only 21 on the board.  Craig Robinson taking all 3 wickets for the visitors.

Hardy and Adamson then moved the score along to 55 before Adamson, who had 2 lives earlier in the over, eventually ran out of luck and was bowled by Jones for 12.

This brought young Cory Milburn to the crease and, up against some quality left arm spin bowling looked assured as he and Hardy tried to move the score along.  Hardy was bowled with the score on 92, bowled by the last ball of Douglas' spell.  Lewis Tanney joined Milburn and the 2 youngsters put on an unbeaten partnership of 58 to take the Rugby club score onto 150-5 off their 50 overs.  Cory finishing unbeaten on 41 and Lewis Tanney on 29 not out.

Greaves and Tanney opened the home side bowling attack looking for early wickets.  This did not happen as McCafferty and Harnett looked to attack everything that the home side threw at them.  Harnett was eventually bowled by Elliott for 26 with the score on 100. McCafferty continued to attack the bowling until he was caught by Adamson off the bowling of Ryan Pringle for 86, his first wicket for the 1st team.  Bedlington knocked off the remaining runs to win comfortably by 8 wickets.

The 2nd team were also in action against their Bedlington counterparts, and, just like the first team came unstuck.  Bedlington batting first, scored 154-6 off their 40 overs with the wickets shared amongst the bowlers.  Unfortunately the Rugby boys were dismissed for 61 with Chris Gray and Wanless Snr the only 2 batsmen to reach double figures.

The 1st team are next in action away to Alnmouth on 18th August.  The 2nd team this week have a week off with no game arranged.

1st team unable to blow out flames
Aug 11, 2012, 8:18 am

Following last weeks defeat to Stocksfield, a more recognisable 1st team took to the field at blue flames looking to drag their opponents into the relegation dog fight.

Having lost the toss the rugby boys were asked to bat. In the face of some accurate swing bowling from Brown and Walker the run rate for the first 20 overs stood at a pedestrian 1 per over. However with wickets in hand there was a chance of some late innings blows and a respectable total. These blows came from Matthew Tanney with a quickfire 23 and a 8th wicket partnership of 31 between the returning Kevin Hetherington and Dean Greaves who scored 26 & 16 respectively. This lifted the visitors score up to 145-8, our highest batting total of the season.

The rugby boys then took to the field in buoyant mood following their revival with the bat and were rewarded with a wicket in only the 2nd over when Walker mistimed a pull shot and was caught at midwicket by maddison off Elliott. However the turning point of the match was to come in the following over when the other opener Burkill was dropped off a difficult skying ball at mid-off. This proved to be costly as he then proceeded to hit out at everything and made a quick fire 56 of 44 balls before he was caught in the deep by Elliott off Greaves. Skipper Pinnington was then LBW to greaves for an aggressive 20 and Keith Brown finished off the run chase with an unbeaten 20. The visitors never gave up but ultimately came up short and lost by 6 wickets.

The 2nd team had a free week as Blue Flames 2nd team conceded the game early on Saturday morning unable to field a side. A free 30 point to the 2nds as they look to cement their position in the middle of the B1 division.

1st Team undone By Brown
Aug 11, 2012, 8:05 am

The 1st Team travelled to Stocksfield with a weakened side looking to end their losing run and climb away from the foot of the table.

Having lost the toss and been asked to bat, Paul Milburn replaced the unavailable Harwood at the top of the order with regular opener Maddison. The partnership stood at 23 before Maddison was removed by Alex Brown. Stephne Henderson, Paul and Cory Milburn also fell to Brown in quick succession, leaving the rugby club on 39-4. Hardy and Tanney then put on a small partnership of 24 together before Tanney fell for 21. Wckets then continued to fall until the visitors were all out for 106. Matthew Tanney top scoring with 21 and Alex Brown the pick of the home side bowlers returning 5-34

Captain Greaves and Lewis Tanney opened the bowling for the rugby club looking for early wickets to try and put pressure on the home side, Greaves removed Mannion for 7 and then Whiley for 4 to leave Stocksfield 53-2. This was it for the rugby club as Wood joined Alex Brown in the middle and they combined to knock off the remaining runs to give the home side victory by 8 wickets. Greaves finishing a great spell of bowling with 2-15 off 10 overs.
