1st Team come back down to earth - 3 out of 3 for 2nds
May 18, 2013, 1:46 pm

The 1st team made the long trip to Tillside looking to continue their good start to the season.

Captain Greaves won his 3 successive toss and inserted the home side who had lost their opening 2 games.  That looked a good decision when greaves removed opener reed in the 1st over without a run scored.  However that was as good as it got for our bowlers as Turnbull and Hindmarsh scored freely and quickly, putting on 140 in the opening 25 overs.    Runs continued to come at a quick rate following the drinks break and Tillside finished their innings with an imposing 304-7 on the board.  The Rugby club didnt really get going and were soon in trouble at 84-5, but just like last week the youngsters Cory Milburn and Lewis Tanney combined to push the score along.  Matthew Tanney also contributing in a losing cause and the rugby club were eventually all out for 182 in the 43rd Over.  All in all a disappointing result where we only picked up 7 points in a game where we thought we could be a little bit more competitive.

The 2nds made it 3 out of 3 with a victory over Stobswood at the rec.  3 Wickets from Steven Henderson and 1 wicket from captain Elliott were the only highlights as Stobswood posted 167-4 off their 40 overs. Contributions with the bat from Michael Watson, David Wanless jnr, Kevin Hetherington and Graeme Pattinson got the Rugby club to the brink of victory, however it was the 9th wicket pair of Ryan Hogg and Ryan Pringle who saw us over the line.  Another 26 points keeps us near the top of the division 2 table at this early stage.

1sts in Drawn game with Berwick - 2nds continue winning run
May 18, 2013, 1:32 pm

The 1st team were involved in a dramatic last ball tied game with Berwick at the rec.

Set 158 to win the game a late order batting collapse took us from 143-5 to needing 5 runs off the last over with the last pair at the crease.

Captain Greaves won the toss and decided to have a bowl and he and Cory Milburn soon had the openers back in the pavilion with the score on 31.  A 3rd wicket partnership of 71 between Wales and Middlemist took berwick into a strong position but the re-introduction of Greaves and Milburn removed the middle order, both bowlers finishing with 4 wickets.  Adamson and Wanless jnr taking the other 2. Adamson and Hardy opened the batting and put on 42 for the 1st wicket until adamson out in the 18th over.  regular wickets then fell leaving the home side on 79-5 with only 15 overs remaining.  A partnership of 64 in 10 overs by Lewis Tanney and Cory Milburn gave the home side hope until opening bowler Wales returned to remove both in quick succession.  With the last pair at the wicket and 5 runs needed for victory Pringle and Fox scrambled 4 only for Pringle to be bowled off the last ball by Elliott.  18 point a decent return from a game that swung both ways.

The 2nds continued their winning start to the season with a nailbiting 2 wicket win against Civil Service at Bullocksteads.  Set 137 to win following some tight bowling by all rugby club bowlers, we got over the line in the final over thanks to Chris Gray who hit a late 6 and 4 to win the game.  Scott Maddison claiming 2 wickets and scoring 39 runs in a good all round display.  2 Wicket each also for David Wanless snr and Craig Jobson while contributions with the bat from Henderson and Lavery helped the rugby boys win and claim a useful 26 points.

Both teams win 1st Games
Apr 25, 2013, 7:42 pm

20/4/2013 - Our 2nds beat Corbridge at the Rec in a low scoring game Rugby Club batted first and scored 105 all out, Corbridge all out 60. Michael Watson top scored with 37 for the rugger boys. Ash finished with 26 points and Corbridge 5 points.

1st Team were away to Blue Flames in the Premier League and we won by 4 wickets. Blue Flames all out 170, wickets were shared around, speacial note to Lewis Tanney who bolwed a very good spell 13 overs 2 for 31. The rugger boys finsished with 171 for 6 off 45 overs with the star man with the bat being Dean Hardy who finsihed 75 not out. Rugger boys 27 points and Blue Flames 6 points.

Great start for the club.

Ground Update
Apr 1, 2013, 8:34 pm

Sunday 31st March our cricket square was fertilised and the outfield areas which we did work on at the end of last season but due to the bad wet weather the grass has not taken, we scarified, seeded, fertilised, top dressed, brushed in and the covered with germination sheets.

Monday 1st April our cricket square was watered to help the fertiliser take quicker and then rolled. That makes it 5 periods of cross over rolling since we have been able to get on the square.
