1st team unable to blow out flames
Aug 11, 2012, 8:18 am

Following last weeks defeat to Stocksfield, a more recognisable 1st team took to the field at blue flames looking to drag their opponents into the relegation dog fight.

Having lost the toss the rugby boys were asked to bat. In the face of some accurate swing bowling from Brown and Walker the run rate for the first 20 overs stood at a pedestrian 1 per over. However with wickets in hand there was a chance of some late innings blows and a respectable total. These blows came from Matthew Tanney with a quickfire 23 and a 8th wicket partnership of 31 between the returning Kevin Hetherington and Dean Greaves who scored 26 & 16 respectively. This lifted the visitors score up to 145-8, our highest batting total of the season.

The rugby boys then took to the field in buoyant mood following their revival with the bat and were rewarded with a wicket in only the 2nd over when Walker mistimed a pull shot and was caught at midwicket by maddison off Elliott. However the turning point of the match was to come in the following over when the other opener Burkill was dropped off a difficult skying ball at mid-off. This proved to be costly as he then proceeded to hit out at everything and made a quick fire 56 of 44 balls before he was caught in the deep by Elliott off Greaves. Skipper Pinnington was then LBW to greaves for an aggressive 20 and Keith Brown finished off the run chase with an unbeaten 20. The visitors never gave up but ultimately came up short and lost by 6 wickets.

The 2nd team had a free week as Blue Flames 2nd team conceded the game early on Saturday morning unable to field a side. A free 30 point to the 2nds as they look to cement their position in the middle of the B1 division.

1st Team undone By Brown
Aug 11, 2012, 8:05 am

The 1st Team travelled to Stocksfield with a weakened side looking to end their losing run and climb away from the foot of the table.

Having lost the toss and been asked to bat, Paul Milburn replaced the unavailable Harwood at the top of the order with regular opener Maddison. The partnership stood at 23 before Maddison was removed by Alex Brown. Stephne Henderson, Paul and Cory Milburn also fell to Brown in quick succession, leaving the rugby club on 39-4. Hardy and Tanney then put on a small partnership of 24 together before Tanney fell for 21. Wckets then continued to fall until the visitors were all out for 106. Matthew Tanney top scoring with 21 and Alex Brown the pick of the home side bowlers returning 5-34

Captain Greaves and Lewis Tanney opened the bowling for the rugby club looking for early wickets to try and put pressure on the home side, Greaves removed Mannion for 7 and then Whiley for 4 to leave Stocksfield 53-2. This was it for the rugby club as Wood joined Alex Brown in the middle and they combined to knock off the remaining runs to give the home side victory by 8 wickets. Greaves finishing a great spell of bowling with 2-15 off 10 overs.

Games off again
Jul 14, 2012, 8:43 am

The games for both teams on Saturday 14.7.2012 are both called off due to the weather, 1st team were due to play Tillside away however they still have problems with their outfield. The 2nd team were due to host Cramlington at the "Rec" and we still have laying water at the rugby club end of the outfield and at the bottom of our square, the grounds man has not been able to get on the facilities at all this week, never mind do any work.

This takes us to Sunday 15.7.2012 when we were due to host the Northumberland League Team v Presidents X1, unfortunately this game has also been hit by the weather as well, as a club it is a great disappointment as we have never hosted the full league side before.

Both games off today 1st were due to play Berwick at home see pictures of ground flooded below.

2nd team were down to play Bomarsund Welfare away and their ground is like a boating lake. Looks like another boring day without cricket. The season might as well not started for the games the club has missed this year.

What a fine summer we are having!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jun 22, 2012, 6:39 pm

Cricket season is this normally meant that we have some sunshine.

Photos taken at 6:00pm on Friday 22nd June. Not a chance of cricket on Saturday against Warkworth CC.

All the effort in sorting out a wicket  for what. Today around 2pm Ashington had a very very heavy rain storm, it must have been over our ground, by the looks of it.

Beverley Cup - Joys and Woes
May 25, 2012, 7:26 am

Our 2nds eventually played Ulgham in the Beverley cup at the 3rd attempt the game played at Ulgham on Tuesday 22nd May. We lost the the toss and bowled first Ulgham scored 77 for 7 in their overs, David Wanless Jnr being the pick of our bowlers he took 3 wickets, his dad took 1, Cory Milburn 1 and Stephen Henderson took the other wicket to fall. We set about the score and our batters did not make it easy they lost 6 wickets in chasing the score down, Kevin Hetherington top scored with 21, John Hope and Jay Little both chipped in with 14 each not out. This set us up for a game against Blagdon Park away on Thursday.

Thursday 24th May Blagdon Park away in the next round of the cup Blagdon won the toss and batted first they scored 145 in their overs losing 5 wickets, M. Senior Jnr top scored with 65. Ash set about the total and did not really build any lasting partnerships ending up 100 for 6 with David Wanless Jnr top scoring for the rugger boys with 23, the man who did the damage was Dave Simpson he took 5 wickets with his spin bowling. Well thats as far as we go in the competition this season, good luck to Blagdon in the next round the best team won on the night.

Both games on
May 21, 2012, 7:18 am

1st team hosted Blue Flames at the "Rec" we won the toss and elected to bowl on a hard  track (over cast conditions) Flames opener had two lucky escapes in the very first over from Greaves when he was dropped twice. However we kept at it with young Lewis Tanney opening the bowling from the Rugby Club end.

We kept taking regular wickets and had Flames in trouble 70 for 7 with Greaves and Tanney doing the damage, until Keith Brown for Flames came to the crease and the experience showed through and he batted very well in building a score of 60+ before he fell and he was supported by a bowler (not sure of name) who decided to have a go and it came off for him with a score of 40+ before he departed the crease. Blue Flames were all out for 188 which was 60 more than we should have allowed them to get, it just showed we were a bowler short.

Harwood and Maddision opened up for "Ash" and put on a nice stand of over 50 when Harwood fell and Maddison went not long after, from this period Flames did what we did to them picking up quick cheap wickets in the early and middle order, we never really got going eventually falling all out for 126. For our troubles we picked up 7 points.

2nd team was away to Blue Flames and this was a quick finish we lost the toss they elected to bat and we bowled them all out for 37 with Ryan Pringle picking up 5 wickets and the rest of the bowlers picked up the odd wicket. After a quick turnaround with no tea we set about the target and we lost 4 wickets chasing it eventually picking up 30 points. From all accounts the wicket was not the best jumping up etc. Great start for the 2nd's that is 2 wins in 2 games played.

Rain hits games again
May 12, 2012, 7:19 am

Both of the clubs weekend fixtures have been hit by the wet weather, 1st were meant to be a home against Stocksfield and our 2nd's were away at Clara Vale.

Our home ground is under water with the none stop rain, the water table has hardly went down from our last heavy rain fall and this rain has just topped it up, at this rate we will be struggling to get a game on at the "Rec" next week.
