Milburn Magic & Proud Peacock!
May 11, 2010, 8:33 am

The 1st team won at blustery Hebburn on Saturday making it 3 wins in a row and now sit proudly on top of the 1st league table of the season.

After winning the toss & batting the top order had to work hard to navigate themselves to 64 for 3 on a wicket where 150+ looked a good score, Adam Peacock with a patient 28 was the main contributor.  However once he perished long time nemesis Aidan Berry ripped through the middle order to leave the innings teetering on 87 for 8.

Step forward Paul Milburn to became the hero of the innings ably supported by young Jonny(0) Richards.  Milburn finished unbeaten on 64 as he & Richards added 59 for the last wicket with some aggressive running & clever strokeplay by Milburn.  The inexperienced Richards who had been a late call up showed plenty of courage to withstand some short pitched bowling from the increasingly frustrated Hebburn attack who were now without the bowled out Berry.  Indeed the partnership had swung the balance of the game & the ‘Rugga Boyz’ now looked favourites in a game they had looked out of.

After tea the older Richards came roaring in wind assisted to unsettle the Hebburn top order, however it was the guile of the evergreen Dean Greaves to reap the rewards.  Finding a bit of swing & varying his length he removed 4 of the top 5 to leave Hebburn struggling 4 down with barely 30 on the board.

Adam Peacock was brought on at the expense of Richards & he struck twice with batsmen offering no shot.  Richards was then brought on for the tiring Greaves who had bowled 8 overs into the wind (despite climbing out of his sickbed to play) & took 3 wickets to wrap the innings up with another for Peacock.

3 wins in a row now for the 1sts despite not having hit the heights of the win at Bomar in the latter 2 games.  Monkseaton are up next at  the Rec on Saturday!

Meanwhile the 2nds had a good win against Bates on Saturday to consolidate their safe Mid table position.  Veterans Wanless Snr & Elliott took 3 wickets apiece as Bates failed to chase down 144.  Scott Maddsion top scored with 25, Lewis Tanney 24 & Mick ‘Bench’ Hudson 24 the other main contributors.

A day of 1sts for the 1sts
Apr 26, 2010, 9:10 am

Sporting new clothing & a new name the 1sts won their opening game of the season against local rivals Bomarsund on Saturday.  James Richards was the hero with a devastating spell of 6 for 40 to leave Bomar all out for 117 chasing 216.

After losing the toss & being inserted skipper Harwood made a patient 34 & Paul Milburn a breezy 42 before a middle order collapse left the innings floundering on 133 for 7.  Sensible late order batting from Dean Greaves (22), Richards (16) & some never before seen strokeplay from number 11 Kirk Newton (16) got the ‘Rugga Boyz’ up to a challenging 216 on decent track offering slightly uneven bounce on occasions.  Nick Wightman bowled well pick up 5 wickets & ‘Big Dave’ Seccombe 3 but 55 extras did not help the Bomar cause!

Following tea an energetic start saw Richards & Greaves bag the key wickets of Steven Thain & Colin Thornton in consecutive orders to leave Bomar reeling.  At this point young ‘Stevey’ took the game by the scruff of the neck obliterating the middle order bowling accurately with decent pace & being backed up by a couple of smart catches by Kevin Hetherington & Midge Adamson.  Indeed numbers 5 to 9 could not muster a run between them & had it not been for a good half century from John Haig Jnr & a late cameo of 27 from Seccombe the result could have been worse.  Paul Milburn (2) bowling spin & Kirk Newton (1) were the other wicket takers.

A first ever league win over their local rivals got the season off to a fine start,  standards were set that need to be maintained throughout the season!

In the reverse fixture at the Rec Bomar were the victors by 33 runs, a century from Brent Mordey helped get them up to 199 for 3, in reply the Rugby Club managed 166 for 7 contributions came from Duncan Storey (45), Rob Clark (34) & 19 not out from Lewis Tanney!

Cricket Weather "Think Again"
Apr 5, 2010, 9:08 am

Why do we build our hopes up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets pray to the sun gods or should we just go to the bar for a beer!!!!

1st team friendly against Ashington 2nd team has been re-arranged at the "Rec" for the 17th of April, their ground is more suitable for racing canoe's."Big flood at bottom end of their ground"

Our second team friedly against Ulgham on the 10th April is in doubt, outfield is soaking wet, very slow in draining away and you guessed it it has hardly stopped raining "Now that's a suprise".

Square has had a good cross over pre season rolling when we have had dry days, but the groundsman is unable to get onto the square to prepare pitches until the rain stops.
