2nd Team hit by the weather
May 9, 2011, 8:03 pm

Our 2nd X1 was up against a strong Bedlington side on 7th may playing at our home ground the "Rec". We won the toss and elected to bat, we lost an early wicket of Micheal Watson for 0 who opened with Michael Hudson.

That fall of wicket brought in 16 year old Cory Milburn at number 3 he and Michael Hudson brought the score to 43 after 16 overs, with Michael on 9 and Cory on 23, when the rain came down, and did it come down, the boys got our mobile covers on to protect the wicket and waited for the rain to give, when this did not happen so they had a early tea and hoped for the weather to break.

After tea the rain got heavier and the 2 capatins decided to call it a day. Points shared 5 each.

Controversial Wilson Cup Tie
May 8, 2011, 7:14 am

The boys from the REC were given the toughest draw an away tie against the Premier League Champions Warkworth on 3rd May. We won the toss and elected to bat on a very good track we posted a reasonable total of 115 for 4 in our 16 overs. Rob Clark showed his class with 47 not out he was backed up by Chris Harwood and Michael Adamson.

Missing bowlers for this tie we opened up with Greaves and Wanless Jnr who bowled their 4 overs straight through, they both kept to a tidy line apart for a few wides, our change bowlers were Paul Milburn and Trevor Elliott.

Warkworth needed 16 with one over left which was bowled by Trevor Elliott, before the last over was bowled the umpire Mr Gilholm awarded Warkworth 5 penalty runs for ouselves being 2 minutes over the allotted time, this was very controversial as we had taken quite a bit of time looking for the ball in the long grass over the boundry line and then the time for a runner to come out and get ready, never to mind the 8 wickets we took in Warkworths run chase.

It all came down to 11 runs from the final over Dargue was batting he hit a 2 from the first 2 balls then a 6 from the third a dot ball for the fourth ball and then a 2 from the penulitmate ball giving the game to Warthworth, they finished with 116 for 8, but the best team on the day lost, we had some very unhappy players sitting back in the changing room after the game.

Comment from the club chairman "Yes it is disapointing however, if we compete and show this spirt for the rest of the season like we did in this tie we should have a good season. As a club we need to take the positives from this game we took the best team in all the divisions down to the second last ball of the game, and we showed them and more importantly ourselves that we can compete with the best when we set our minds to it".

Greaves to hot for GEMS
May 8, 2011, 6:53 am

Dean Greaves proved to hot to handle for GEMS who could not get to grips with his swing, in his first game as captain he lost the toss GEMS elected to bat on a good track and could only post 115 all out. Dean bowled 12 overs and took 7 for 18 and Spears took the other 3 wickets for 30.

When we took to the field to bat we lost early wickets and could not build partnerships, Chris Harwood scored 24, Rob Clark 16 and Paul Milburn 37 not out, Lewis tanney eventually scored the winning run by pulling a short ball for 4.

The midweek team played Alnmouth & Lesbury in the club 1st ever fixture at their ground they set a good total of 135 for 2 and we were unable to get near the target finishing on 105 for 4 from 16 overs, great effort from a youngish team lead by old Wanless.

Cramlington step in
Apr 22, 2011, 8:26 am

Following the pull out of Rock Cricket Club from the friendly fixture, Cramlington CC stepped in at late notice and the game on the 16th went ahead, both teams attacking the bowling which resulted in a high scoring game.

Ashington Rugby CC set a total of 198 off their 35 overs, both Chris Harwood and Paul Milburn hitting 50's, Cramlington set off at a brisk pace with some poor bowling by the home side but take nothing away from Cramlington they played well and just fell short of the target in their 35 overs, Billy Pullman top scoring for Cramlington.

Big thank you to Ken Ward and Alan Howe who umpired the match.

This game also gave us the chance to have a dry run before the season starts to see how using the Rugby Club facilities for our tea's would work, following the break in which caused untold damage to our tea room and kitchen.
